Junior Energy System Modeller/Analyst

About Quintel

Quintel is a small and dynamic company with significant impact. Quintel advances the energy transition by providing others with insights into the energy system. Central to our approach is that we do not assume ownership of a problem, but rather enable others to gain insights themselves and then make progress. We do this through advisory work, research, and model development, with our main product being the open-source and open-access Energy Transition Model (ETM).

Job description

Quintel is looking to expand its modelling and development team. Structural funding has just been secured to fundamentally renew and improve the Energy Transition Model (ETM), Quintel’s key product. We are growing our team to realise this major improvement, which will offer exciting new challenges. This is the perfect time to start working at Quintel!

The ETM is used by thousands of users ranging from governments and grid operators to consultants and students. They use the model to create realistic plans for the future of their region or country towards a clean, affordable and reliable energy system. The ETM is fully open source, open access, web-based and is regarded by many as the ‘de-facto standard’ for energy system simulation in the Netherlands and abroad.

What you’re going to do

As a Junior Modeller, you are responsible for translating the real-life energy system dynamics into useful mathematical abstractions and implementing those in the ETM and other relevant models. Together with a team of passionate modellers and software developers, you will be working on a wide range of topics, such as…

  • Research the latest developments in the production of synthetic fuels
  • Design a model for hybrid offshore wind and implement it
  • Process country-level data for Switzerland to add it to the ETM as an available region
  • Create a tool to perform a sensitivity analysis on the model and share it with clients
  • Participate in modelling discussions in a broader scenario study

We’re looking for a new addition to our team, for 32 – 40 hours a week. Furthermore, you…

  • Have 0 – 2 years of relevant experience
  • Are proficient in both Dutch and English
  • Have a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as physics, energy sciences, chemistry, mathematics or systems engineering
  • Have experience with mathematical modelling
  • Are passionate about sustainability and the energy transition
  • Enjoy solving complex, abstract challenges
  • Communicate clearly and work well in a team setting

Optionally, you…

  • Are familiar with the dynamics of the energy system
  • Have a background in data analytics or data engineering
  • Have knowledge about industrial processes
What we offer
  • An inspiring work environment with a strong sense of purpose
  • Salary between €3,100 and €3,800 per month, depending on experience
