Team lead modeling and software development

Combining a passion for advancing the energy transition with a knack for leadership!

About the Job

Quintel's key product, the Energy Transition Model (ETM), is used by thousands of users ranging from governments and grid operators to consultants and students. They use the model to create realistic plans for the future of their region or country towards a clean, affordable and reliable energy system. The ETM is fully open-access, web-based and is regarded by many as the 'de-facto standard' for energy system simulation in the Netherlands and abroad.

With the number of (high profile) users of the Energy Transition Model rapidly increasing, we are expanding our team to keep up with the growing demands put on our model and organisation.

This is also an opportune time to optimize our organisation to leverage the talent and energy of the people that make Quintel shine.

Quintel consists of ten highly motivated professionals driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the world. We are passionate about helping current and future decision makers navigate the complex field of energy transition. The team is divided into two teams wich work together seamlessly: the modeling/development team and the advisory team. Each team is coordinated by a team lead and the company as a whole is led by a management team consisting of partners Joris Berkhout and Alexander Wirtz.

As team lead, you will be responsible for the continued performance, development, improvement and maintenance of the Energy Transition Model. Part of your work will be focussing on getting your hands dirty improving the ETM, but you will also be the linking pin between the modelers and developers and the management team.

You, and your team of five to ten modelers and software developers will be working on projects that are aimed at improving the usefulness of the ETM for its user base. These can be technical: for example researching the ins and outs of a new promising technology and adding it to the ETM. Other times these are more conceptual: for example improving the workflow around the ETM to better support its user in the challenging decision they have to make in the energy transition.

We envision a full-time position where time will be divided between the team lead role and participating in projects in approximately a 40/60 ratio. We are open for candidates with a background in (energy) modeling.

As team lead, you will be instrumental in taking the ETM to the next level. You will play a key role in strategic decisions about where the Energy Transition Model is going next, both technically and conceptually.

We are looking for someone who:

  • has a professional working proficiency in Dutch
  • has strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • has three or more years of relevant experience in (energy related) modeling
  • knows how to lead and get the best out of their co-workers
  • is passionate about the energy transition, modeling and helping others use the ETM
  • has experience and is confident in co-authoring proposals together with other members of the Quintel team
  • is a creative, innovative thinker and has a "CAN DO!" mentality
  • has strong communication skills and is intrinsically motivated to deliver excellence
  • enjoys problem solving and in-depth projects with our team of experts

What we offer

  • an inspiring work environment with a strong sense of purpose
  • an extensive network of governments, grid operators, consultants and other energy experts
  • excellent salary and benefits
  • excellent training possibilities
  • an office location in the historic Amsterdam Canal District
  • possibility of hybrid working (Monday is our office day)

Location

You will work from our office in the center of Amsterdam. You will travel around the Netherlands, and possibly Europe.

About us

We help our clients answer questions like: "What does a climate neutral energy system for my area look like?". The ETM is used by governments, grid operators, consultants, NGO's, academics and others to research their options to bring down greenhouse gas emissions. Since the energy transition is a highly collaborative effort, the ETM is rapidly becoming a factual framework for discussions between various stakeholders in the energy transition.

Quintel develops the Energy Transition Model and is a Dutch company, with an office in the centre of Amsterdam. Our team gets the work done during office hours, so that we can enjoy our evenings, with the occasional after-work drinks.
